By Tony LaRussa, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW

When Tom and Nancy Caruso leave Pittsburgh for a trip to Oregon, they’ll not only be taking a longer-than-usual route, but also relying on unorthodox transportation.

On Saturday, the Southern California couple will launch from the Point, Downtown, in a 25-foot fishing boat they bought on eBay for $8,900. They plan to retrace the route followed by famed explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1803.

The Carusos’ modern-day expedition is sponsored by Edible Arrangements International Inc. and is designed to inspire people to “eat right and move more,” Nancy Caruso said as she and her husband traveled through Texas on their way to Pittsburgh. The couple own an Edible Arrangements franchise, which sells artistically designed arrangements of fruit.

Nancy Caruso, a marine biologist, also is the founder and executive director of Get Inspired!, a nonprofit organization dedicated to “inspiring passion and purpose through the discovery of arts and sciences.”

“Nancy and I want to live healthy active lives, and we thought the country could use a little inspiration, too,” said Tom Caruso, 41. “We love being outdoors, enjoying nature and eating healthy foods. But like most people, we find it’s often hard to do.”

Nancy Caruso, 39, said she and her husband “decided that we were going to do this trip to change our lives and maybe inspire others to do the same.”

She said the inspiration for the trip came from her grandfather, William S. Deely, who lived in Pittsburgh and made the same voyage to the West Coast in a 16-foot boat in 1973.

“My grandfather lived to be 96 years old, and I never remember him being sick,” she said. “The one thing he was always doing was moving — walking, building tree houses, dancing, working on his house — he never sat around.”

Nancy Caruso, who grew up in northern Virginia, spent many summers visiting her grandfather in Pittsburgh. They often roamed the three rivers on his boat, she said.

“He loved his boat and had a let’s-do-it attitude,” she said. “He was a great inspiration to me, so we’re hoping people will be inspired by what we are doing.”

The Carusos’ planned three-month excursion will begin at the Ohio River, go down the Mississippi River and then up the Missouri River where, like Lewis and Clark, they will be forced to travel over the Rocky Mountains by land.

They will get back on the water at the Snake River, which will take them to the Columbia River and eventually the Pacific Ocean. Their final destination is Astoria, Ore.

edible-arrangementsWhat an honor that Edible Arrangements has been named to Inc. Magazine’s “10 Promising Franchises for 2011”! I feel genuinely privileged to be able to work with the fine people who make Edible Arrangements work so well for so many. Our amazing franchisees have turned this concept into the popular holiday and everyday products their customers want, and by doing such a great job making customers happy every day, they have made Edible Arrangements a truly successful franchise! Of course, I also want to recognize a hard-working corporate staff that does so much to support our franchisees on a daily basis – with the technical assistance, marketing materials and operational excellence that enable them to run their stores seamlessly. Thanks also to Inc. Magazine for their recognition of our franchise, and congratulations to the other franchises recognized by Inc this year. It is truly an honor to be acknowledged this way, and a tribute to the exceptional people in our organization who make it work seven days a week! Here’s what Inc. Magazine has to say about Edible Arrangements:(http://www.inc.com/ss/10-most-promising-franchises-2011#5)

“Edible Arrangements, as its name implies, sells hand-sculpted fresh-fruit arrangements. The company, which began franchising back in 2001, has grown remarkably well over the last 10 years. In fact, it recently signed its 1,000th new store franchise agreement. In 2010, Edible Arrangements opened 84 stores in the U.S., and plans to open several more stores—from Massachusetts to Mumbai—in the next several months. ‘We started franchising in 2001 and the continuous growth of Edible Arrangements has been very exciting,’ said founder and CEO Tariq Farid, in a statement. ‘Our proven franchise system, healthful high-quality products, and our franchisees are the keys to our success.’”

Two days ago I was in Louisiana visiting some of our stores. After I left New Orleans I made my way to Baton Rouge; what a great experience visiting some of our most amazing store owners. But I want to share the story of Katie and Carrie in our Baton Rouge stores. These young, energetic women, with smiling faces are inspiring!

Before I even met them, I felt the energy as I walked into their Edible Arrangements store. It wasn’t just the décor or the cleanliness of the inviting store – although everything was perfect! I could sense that the people in this place were really enjoying what they were doing, and you could feel the electricity of that excitement in the air. What was interesting to me – and surprising – was that the two owners, Katie and Carrie, weren’t even at the store. But their enthusiastic spirit surely was – one person on phone, another walking a customer through the ordering process, people in back preparing arrangements, and busy store manager Kendra overseeing all the action.

I knew I had to meet Katie and Carrie, and asked Kendra when they would arrive. Turns out they were planning to come but had gotten too busy at their other store, and couldn’t get away. So, I hopped in the car and drove 20 minutes to the second location to meet up with them. Walking to their store, I felt that same feeling again, and it reminded me of the feeling we used we get when we first opened our store. I loved being there, and when a customer came in, we stopped whatever we were doing and ran to help, then waited to hear the customer’s compliment: “I love what you do” or “I sent someone one of your arrangements before, and they loved it.”

When I saw Katie and Carrie’s second store, with stocked shelves and staff offering samples to customers, it’s evident that what makes them so successful is their energy. These two women are in their twenties, successfully running two stores and inspired to build their third. Katie and Carrie are two people to watch carefully and the community in Baton Rouge is doing just that! I often tell store owners that this kind of energy is what successful businesses need. Katie and Carrie’s success will inspire many others to follow their dreams. Inspiration doesn’t just come from what we achieve in business; it comes from the energy and enthusiasm to pursue what you love with passion that makes you an example for others to follow your lead.

Hats off to Katie and Carrie for their amazing operation. With their winning formula of energy, focus and customer service, the sky is the limit on what they can reach. Siegen Baton Rouge
