Grant will provide 50 teachers with training in Afghanistan

November 9, 2015 — The Tariq Farid Foundation today announced a $20,000 grant to Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan) for its teacher training program in Afghanistan. The grant will enable 50 teachers to receive training in both subject matter and teaching methods.
CW4WAfghan was established almost two decades ago to work toward improving conditions of human rights, ending women’s oppression, and providing opportunities for Afghan women to live their lives with dignity, certainty and purpose.
At a cost of only $400 per teacher, CW4WAfghan’s Lantern: Teacher Training for Afghanistan Program provides quality teacher education as well as numerous supplementary activities to reinforce the teachers’ professional development, including equipping of all participating schools with School Starter Kits that include one science lab kit and one library kit per school.
“Educating girls in Afghanistan and around the world is an issue I care deeply about,” said Tariq Farid, who operates his own private charitable foundation and is Founder and CEO of Edible Arrangements and numerous other companies. “The future of the country depends on an educated population and workforce. Giving girls a chance to succeed by providing them with skilled teachers is a cause I am proud to support.”
Kelly Hebrank, director of the Tariq Farid Foundation, was struck by the drastic increase in student enrollment in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban, and the need for training the nation’s teachers.
“It’s an incredible accomplishment that millions of Afghan children now have the opportunity to go to school, but they should be entering a school with books, materials, and skilled teachers,” Hebrank said. “When we learned about the work Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan is doing in this area, we knew we wanted to help.”
Janice Eisenhauer, Executive Director of CW4WAfghan, recently announced that the Program’s Lantern Fund is well over the halfway mark for its goal to raise $2 million from 2013 to 2018 to support teacher education in Afghanistan
“We are tremendously grateful to the Tariq Farid Foundation for this generous contribution and for helping to make it possible for us to train 1,000 teachers in the coming year,” Eisenhower said.
