Last year the Tariq Farid Foundation was honored to contribute to the Cindy Lynn Sherwin Memorial Foundation to help create a playground at an elementary school in a needy area of New Haven, Connecticut.

The playground was the idea of Jessica DaSilva as a way to honor her older sister, Cindy, who had passed away eight years earlier.

Cindy, a triathlete and fitness instructor, died unexpectedly from an aneurism while she was training for an Ironman competition. Jessica’s dream was to honor her sister’s memory and her dedication to promoting health and fitness with the construction of a playground for children.

That dream came true this week and the Tariq Farid Foundation had the honor of participating in the dedication of the newly constructed playground at the West Rock Author’s Academy, a pre-K – 4th Grade magnet school. The school offers advanced writing and computer programs, but there was no access to physical fitness or exercise equipment.

Now there is!

During the dedication of the playground, my wife Asma pointed out that according to research children today spend half as much time outside as did their parents. Asma and I are among those who believe strongly that play and outdoor activity are critical to the physical, mental and social development of children. As adults, it is our responsibility to provide these opportunities and spaces for children to get outside.

My family and I are very grateful to have played a part in making this playground a reality for all the children who will enjoy it for years to come. Below are a few photos for you to enjoy from the dedication ceremony.
