Summer always marked one of my favorite seasons as a child, and in less than 100 days it will officially be summer. For many kids across the country, that means it’s time to start packing for summer camp.

For many children, camp is a great place discover their talents and skills while gaining confidence, making new friends and exploring the wonders of nature during such developmentally critical times in their life.

The Edible Arrangements convention this week in Las Vegas held many, many highlights for me. Few, however, matched the opportunity we had earlier in the week to join the passionate volunteers of the Serving Our Kids Foundation in Las Vegas for an important project. Through the Tariq Farid Foundation, we have been able to support many different worthwhile organizations. Most recently, we have had the opportunity to team up with the Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW), which helps members of the Hispanic community who are experiencing temporary financial setbacks.

Last year the Tariq Farid Foundation was honored to contribute to the Cindy Lynn Sherwin Memorial Foundation to help create a playground at an elementary school in a needy area of New Haven, Connecticut.

The playground was the idea of Jessica DaSilva as a way to honor her older sister, Cindy, who had passed away eight years earlier.

Learning that a family member has cancer is heart-breaking, especially if that person is a child. I know this first-hand because it happened to my family shortly after we had moved to the United States.

At the age of four, my youngest brother was diagnosed with leukemia. The entire family was devastated and fearful. But my family knew we were blessed to be in the United States, and close to world-class medical treatment.
