On Thursday evening I was honored to be among a group of local businesspeople inducted into the Junior Achievement of Southwest New England’s Business Hall of Fame.
One thing that made the evening so special was that my children were there to see me accept the award. I believe it is one of our greatest responsibilities to inspire and educate the next generation, which is why the mission of Junior Achievement is so close to my heart. Learning that a family member has cancer is heart-breaking, especially if that person is a child. I know this first-hand because it happened to my family shortly after we had moved to the United States.
At the age of four, my youngest brother was diagnosed with leukemia. The entire family was devastated and fearful. But my family knew we were blessed to be in the United States, and close to world-class medical treatment.

One of the most intimidating challenges of moving to a new country is learning a new language and customs. I know this from first-hand experience.
Thanks to the help of caring teachers and new friends, however, I was able to make the transition when I moved to this country as a child. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have such support.
